Looking for an eventful short break in Herefordshire this year? From local culture to curious cuisine, there are a whole range of fun and stimulating events on the way for 2016. Here at The Feathers Hotel in Ledbury, we love these celebrations and gatherings. Run by passionate locals, they are a great way to try something new, whether it’s a journey back in time, a glimpse into regional craftsmanship or immersing yourself in the sounds and flavours that make Herefordshire what it is. Here are some of the most eagerly-anticipated gatherings to put in your diary for 2016:
Herefordshire Guild of Craftsmen Easter Show 2016 (Market House, Ledbury, 25th March - 3rd April)
From hand-painted china, to glass ceramics and sculpture, this event showcases the very best of Herefordshire crafts. Fittingly held in Ledbury’s own historic Market House, this promises to be a treat for any visitor with a taste for all things crafty, creative and classical. Open daily from 10:00 to 16:30, this is a wonderful chance to get closer to many of the region’s great craftsmen and women. Click here for further details and links.
Spring Slendour and Easter Egg Hunt at Croome (Easter Weekend/ Various dates 2016)
With stacks to see and explore from pretty gardens to wildlife trails, it’s easy to see why Croome is one of the best loved National Trust properties in Herefordshire. Not far from Ledbury, it is a lovely place for a romantic stroll at any time of year. It can also be brilliant for families, however, with hands-on play areas and plenty to try and learn. The annual Easter Egg Hunt is a particular highlight, but just one of various enjoyable events this year. See the official National Trust site for further details and events.
Shedding some light on the Dark Ages in Herefordshire (Sutton St Nicholas, April 18th, 7:30pm)
Some of the most interesting events in the region are not the nationally recognised curtain raisers, but smaller gatherings of informed and passionate locals. Tim Hoverd of Herefordshire Archaeology is your guide to a lost era in this case, delving into recent discoveries that yield intriguing clues into the life of our forgotten ancestors. Theatre and Live Music in the Malverns (Various dates in 2016)
Visitors should need little excuse to explore the Malvern Hills at any time of year (as featured on our recent blog on the area). It’s not just the views that draw admirers in the spring however, as some great live music and theatre events demonstrate. Putting a swing into spring this year is the Great Malvern Jazz Weekend (25-27 March), while Malvern Theatres have an entertaining and cultured spring line up with a great range of events from classical concerts to dramatic works. See the official site for full listings and booking information.
The Big Apple & Blossomtime Weekend (1st & 2nd May, various venues near Ledbury)
With a backdrop of blossoming apple trees, this great annual Herefordshire event celebrates the region’s food and drink heritage with a grand helping of cider and local food. From guided walks to tasting workshops, it represents a great cluster of local events for any foodie to attend. Should you fancy a couple of ciders, the other benefit is that the event is held within easy reach of Ledbury by taxi (or you could always persuade your other half to drive!).
