Reasons We Love Winter in Ledbury

When is the best time of year to visit Ledbury? Each season has its highlights, but for good cheer, special events and a superb independent shopping experience from Christmas to New Year sales, winter takes some beating. Here are just some of the reasons our guests love winter breaks in Herefordshire and rate Ledbury as one of England's prettiest market towns.

Beautiful Buildings and Living Heritage

Image titleEvents such as Ledbury Victorian Fair and our wonderful old buildings keep local heritage alive (image from the wonderful Friends of Wytchwood Morris group, seen here getting into the spirit of things in 2016!)

Does it get any more nostalgic than a festive evening in Ledbury’s historic town centre? Forget the plastic reindeer and pound stores; historic locations such as the Market House, Barrett-Browning Clocktower and of course the Feathers Hotel simply ooze authenticity! In fact, there are well over 100 listed buildings in Ledbury.

But the other great joy is the way we bring English history to life. We have some wonderful tours and historic sites to discover for yourself, while groups such as the Friends of Wychwood Morris and events like Ledbury Victorian Fair are always a great way to preserve traditions in style.

Mulled Wine & Freshly Baked Treats by the Fire

We are always partial to sweet things and traditional comforts here at the Feathers Hotel. For anyone feeling the winter chill, or perhaps a little saddle sore after an extended walk around the town, little beats a real fire, freshly baked mince pies and other goodies, along with a cup of freshly brewed tea or something a little more medicinal! Be warned: it’s such a cosy, characterful setting you might not want to leave.

Art Galleries and Crafty Goings On

Ledbury is not just a great shopping destination, but a wonderful place for arts and crafts these days. Not just the kind of works you see in galleries, but the type of creativity you can use, wear or gift to others. Perhaps the most exciting current project of all is Artistree, a collective featuring all manner of talented locals from classical painters to sculptors, photographers and handmade jewellery experts. Do keep an eye on their Facebook page for current highlights. If you’re quick, there is also still time to see their Winter Solstice Exhibition (until 21st Dec) at Ledbury’s Heritage Centre (HR8 1DW).
