There are various National Trust sites and pretty gardens that show their best colours in the autum. Sites like Croft Castle and the Weir Garden are splendid this time of year. But perhaps the real gem this year is a little further east of the Malverns, half an hour’s drive from Ledbury, at Croome Court. Effectively his location is several sites for the price of one with stacks to explore. The follies, castles and lodges are wonders of period architecture and style, courtesy of a then fledgling landscape designer call Capability Brown.

Better still though, there are regular tours to offer a window on seldom-glances aspects of life at the court. Whether it’s a journey to the basement or even a “romp” through the bedrooms, passionate volunteer guides ensure a lively, revealing experience. See
