Ledbury Poetry Festival 2015 Highlights

With Britain’s biggest poetry festival coming very soon, Ledbury is already excitedly gearing up for another sensational few days of spoken word performances, creative workshops and some very special guests. For the Feathers Hotel, it is always an exciting time for us as sponsors. We are located right in the centre of all the festival events and goings on, with some of our own highlights to add to what should be another sparkling gathering.

What would we recommend for the visitor to this year’s poetry festival? You could track down scintillating performances from new poets on the scene, or indeed celebrate the lives and works of some of Ledbury’s most famous guests and residents. Or why not unleash your own creativity by getting involved in one of the creative writing workshops? These represent some of the finest short courses and day sessions in Herefordshire, giving you access to inspiring poets and professionals.

From timeless romantic verse to punk poetry and family events, here are some of our recommended highlights for the 2015 Ledbury Poetry Festival, including some of our own live performances running over the duration of the event.

Poxymoron (Feathers Hotel, Fri 3rd July) Get into festival mode with our live local band, performing in our garden.

Walks, words and family fun (Sat 4th / Sat 11th July 2pm, free but ticketed): Sara-Jane Arbury leads this enjoyable, free family event on the opening Saturday of the festival. Ideal for creative young minds, this is your chance to get involved in a new project for Ledbury, adding fresh poetry and a treasure trail around the town. The event is free, but requires booking. Still places left for two sessions at present, ticket details here.

Juliette Stevenson reads Emily Dickinson (Sat 4th July, Community Hall, 12.45pm – 1.45pm, £9)
One of America’s best loved romantic poets, the prolific works of Emily Dickinson still resonate with listeners over a century after her death. Who better to breathe new life into these works than star of stage and screen Juliet Stevenson? The celebrated actress will also give an intimate portrait of Dickenson’s fascinating, if sometimes tragic personal life and her trials and obsessions. Click here for ticket details.

An Audience with Pam Ayres (Sun 5th July, The Feathers Hotel): This year, we are proud to host the 'superseat' ticket for an evening with the much loved comic, poet and TV star. Guaranteed to be an entertaining evening, tickets are available via the Ledbury Poetry Festival website, click here.

It’s a Slam! If the idea of poetry readings and polite audiences is a bit tame for you, the Ledbury Poetry Slam (Sun 5th July, the Market Theatre £9) could be right up your street. Expect a raucous evening of wordplay, humour and heckling. You could simply enjoy the show, or perhaps get involved yourself? Tickets still available here.

Atilla the Stockbroker (Thu 9th July, Burgage Hall, 8pm – 10pm £8): Always a funny and rabble-rousing performer, the punk poet returns to the festival to bring his unashamedly political, hilarious and abrasive brand of verse to delight new and old fans alike. Tickets here.

A Month of Sundays (Feathers Hotel, Sat 11th July). The Ledbury based folksie bluesie jazzie floosies perform live in our garden. Come and sample some of our great food and tasty wines and ales, the perfect accompaniment to this great session of live music in Ledbury.

Readings will be followed with a discussion of the great romantic poet and the themes of love and death simmering in his works. Tickets available here.
